Fostering Travel's mission statement is to help you get there, stay there, and have fun at your destination without breaking the bank. This article is about staying there without breaking the bank.
Our first site to explore when we are looking for a hotel on points is Award Mapper. Awardmapper integrates maps and hotel lists to show you your options in a particular city that you search.
Home page- one giant map with all hotel chains listed.
We will oftentimes narrow down a search based on the hotels we have access to points in. In this case, I have narrowed the search down to the Caribbean and hotel chains of Hyatt (transfer partner of Chase), Intercontinental (IHG credit card points and also transfer partner of chase but don't transfer points to IHG!!), Marriott and Starwood (from the SPG credit cards).
Once you have found a hotel that you like and see the number of points that it would take to stay there, then click on the link to go through to that particular hotel's website and search your actual dates to see if they have availability.
Awardmapper shows you hotels that are in a particular area, but does not mean that there will actually be a room available with points for your dates. Use the particular hotels website to check on the availability as shown below.
Take for instance a visit to San Juan, Puerto Rico over the first weekend of June, 2018. We have limited it to just the hotel chains that we have points in.
Once you have determined the area that you want, you can click through to the hotel of your choice to check on availability. We picked the Hyatt House San Juan. According to Awardmapper, the hotel should cost 12,000 Gold Passport Points (the name of Hyatt's point program).
In this case, the hotel did not have points availability for these dates. However, zooming in on the map shows the Sheraton Hotel is right around the corner from the Hyatt House.
Again, the search has to be done on Sheraton's website to check on actual availability. If available, the hotel should cost 10,000 points according to Award Mapper.
